Management
The four functions: what a manager actually does
Plan, organise, lead, control. Every management book is an elaboration of these four.
Management theory gets a bad reputation for being vague. The useful core is surprisingly concrete: almost everything a manager does falls into four functions, and they form a loop rather than a checklist.
Planning — deciding what the outcome is and how you will know you got there. This includes setting objectives and the measures that will reveal whether they were met.
Organising — deciding who does what, with what authority, and with what reporting lines. Structure is a decision, not a default.
Leading — getting people to actually want to do it: direction, motivation, communication, resolving conflict.
Controlling — comparing what happened against the plan, and correcting. Note the word is not "blame"; it is "monitor and adjust".

The loop is the point: control feeds back into planning.
A plan with no control is a wish. Control with no plan has no baseline. Two things worth noticing. First, planning without measures is not planning — it is hoping. If you cannot state how you would detect failure, you have not actually specified the objective. Second, the loop only works if control feeds back into planning. Many organisations control (report numbers) without ever re-planning, which turns the loop into a one-way reporting ritual.
What makes planning real rather than aspirational?
Planning
Objectives plus the measures that reveal success or failure.
Organising
Who does what, with what authority, reporting to whom.
Controlling
Compare actual to plan, then adjust — not blame.
